CA, Microsoft, IBM and CollabNet Lock Horns in the Change & Configuration Administration Equipment Category
Definition Of Configuration Management
Tool help for change and configuration management has advanced quite a bit on the decades. Initially it started as the power to have an unique lock on a file whenever you checked it out - this was the "state-of-the-art" as the '60s moved into the '70s. The idea of alter packages, or updates, launched progressively by way of the '70s, '80s and '90s, were instrumental in relocating alter control along. Version control - Each and every step is maintained in a Variation Manage resource along the lines of those offered by Serena (commercial software) or Subversion (Open Source). Several agreed set of items (Configuration Items, or CIs for short) stored within the equipment symbolize baselines. In other words, they are the set of revisions at this point in time in production. They are not necessarily the most recent revisions. Builds intended for deployment to any post-development conditions (QA, Test, Prod, whatever) will almost always be pulled from Edition Control, and in no way copied direct from a improvement environment.
While the concept of configuration management is difficult to grasp, it could well become fully understood by the aim and goals of configuration management technology. CCM is composed of three distinct practices: configuration administration that is the creation, documentation and updating of ordinary settings for all supported IT components; alter management that is the process for identifying and approving brand new configuration settings and updates; and change detection which is an on-going process of monitoring for inappropriate changes. Achieving compliance aims for ensuring IT infrastructure reliability needs automated options that address all 3 CCM disciplines.
How does it work?
To date, the growth of network gadget hardware has taken place at a much quicker rate than the equivalent increase in network management or community configuration management software. In quite a few respects it is comprehensible - Network Devices did not really want managing or configuring initially as they were black boxes that either handed information or not. It was only with the creation of shared network infrastructures like Ethernet that this configuration of addresses and protocols converted crucial and some consideration produced from the community topology to cater for traffic passes and volumes.
